Summary
May is found under a boulder at the bottom of a river. The whole household goes into mourning. Then June finds May's suicide note causing mixed emotions throughout the Mary sisters. Zach feels hatred towards the racist town who threw him in jail and causes him basically to hate white people. May is put to rest and August stops the honey making so her and June can mourn their sister, leaving Lily to feel alone. After a week of mourning, things are back to normal. June and Neil get married and after ther ceremony, Lily and Zach walk hand in hand down the river. Zach kisses her and tells her that they can be together after he becomes a lawyer. Lily finally sits down with August and tells her about her and Rosaleen's past. She tells August that she doesn't deserve to be loved because she killed her mother. August tells her otherwise and tells her that many people love her. August tells Lily about her mother, and since Lily can't really understand everything August is saying, she feels hatred toward her mother for leaving her with T-Ray. August tries to make Lily understand that her mother was trying to make things right.
Quote
"I do it to remind us that life gives way into death, and then death turns around and gives way into life" (Kidd 206)
Reaction
This quote means, to me, that living things will die, but death brings on new life. One example in the book was May. May's was lived and then died. After her death, Neil and June got married. The new life together of June and Neil ocuured after May's death.
